We hear many messages from every corner of our lives urging us to take good care of ourselves. “Exercise!” “Eat right!” “Stop and smell the roses!” But is it really a big deal? After all, most of us can just toss back some coffee and push through our day without taking the time to work out or meditate. If you are able to step back and take an objective look, you will find that there are many good reasons to pay closer attention to the importance of health, fitness, and wellness. Here are just a few.
What is Wellness?
Wellness has become a bit of a buzzword in some circles, leaving the rest of us wondering just what it entails. It is simply a catch-all term referring to the process of improving our quality of life through holistic practices. A holistic practice is any method or process which treats us as a whole – mind, body, and soul. Seeking wellness puts us on the path to improving our health in every area – physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and socially. Meditation, prayer, healthful eating and drinking, yoga, exercise, and positive thinking are some of the most common forms of preserving and enhancing wellness.
Why is it Important to Exercise?
While it may seem like exercising and training our bodies is a waste of time if we don’t aspire to look like Hollywood’s version of physical attractiveness, there is a much better reason to stay active – our very lives might depend on it. A sedentary lifestyle is associated with higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and earlier death. Exercise improves your body’s ability to oxygenate for fighting disease, enhancing posture, and raise endurance. Plus, by training your body you also enhance your balance, speed, reflexes, and even your mental capabilities.
Do I Really Need to Eat Healthy?
You may make fun of your friend or relative that always turns down junk food, but as it turns out, they’re onto something. Any type of food will technically fill our stomach and keep us alive, but fresh food actually feeds us at a cellular level and empowers our body to function at its best. A diet high in fresh produce, pure water, nuts and seeds, and vitamin-rich grass-fed animal products will help us stay slim, have more energy throughout the day, stay regular, and even help our skin, hair, and nails to be strong and smooth.
Where Do I Start?
If you are new to the concept of wellness, small steps and substitutions will help you find your path. Try taking a walk for 30 minutes after dinner instead of watching television. Bypass chips and donuts, and eat a fresh apple as a snack instead. Join a local yoga class for beginners, and make friends on the same path while you learn about moving your body, being aware of your breath, and meditating.
Now that you better understand the importance of health, fitness, and wellness, you have the power to make any necessary changes in your lifestyle to enhance your mind, body, and soul. Release all that does not serve you, and practice gratitude daily. Care for your body, and it will care for you!
